About Fused Glass
Fused Glass is formed by joining together sheets of glass at a high temperature, creating beautifully textured layers. Glass-fusing was the main method of creating glass pieces for 2000 years before the development of the glass blowpipe. It has been dated back to the Romans.
To design and fire fused glass takes 2- 4 days.
There are three ‘firing’ processes involved in glass fusing;
Full fuse – I fire the glass at a high temperature (usually around 700-800 degrees) so that the different layers of coloured or transparent glass, melt and become into one flat piece.
Tack fusing – This takes place at a much lower temperature. While still sticking the layers together, tack fusing retains the shape of the individual glass components, giving a tactile 3D effect and adding vitality and sparkle.
Slumping – Finally, to create a bowl, a plate or a self-supporting S-curved profile, I put the flat glass on a shaped mould back in the kiln for a further 12 hours or sometimes longer. This process is known as ‘slumping’.
